Halloween is right around the corner, which means – if you’re not cosplaying 24/7 – it’s that rare time of year when we can dress up in magnificent geekdom.
If you’re one of the brave souls who actually plans on hosting a Halloween party this year, first: bless your soul, and second – we have six super easy ideas to turn up the nerd at your next party.
By the way, did I mention these ideas were super easy?
Let’s get started:
Set The Mood With A Freaking Tardis Door
You don’t have to be a card-carrying Whovian to pay homage to the Doctor Who series, or its ridiculously huge fandom.
Thanks to its status as the longest-running sci-fi series of all time – for 43 years! – if your nerdy friends don’t watch the show, they definitely respect it.
Knock your buddies’ socks off before they even step foot into your party with your own larger-than life Tardis door. For a temporary solution, check out this tutorial from Sustaining the Powers.
Or, if you want to let your neighbors know you’re a Whovian for life (REPRESENT!), there are more permanent tutorials on YouTube.
Impress Science Nerds With Glowing Algae
You can’t have a Halloween party without glow-in-the dark decorations! But, instead of decorating your haunted lair with glow sticks (lame!), step it up with some wonderful nerdy and naturally-glowing Dino Eggs.
These Dino Eggs photosynthesize during the day and produce a brilliant blue when played with at night. Their natural glow comes from microscopic algae, called dinoflagellates.
If there are any scientists or nature nerds at your Halloween party, you’re sure to earn some mad street cred with these eggs.
Turn Up the Party With (Adult) Romulan Ale Cocktails
Sure, those pesky Romulans are a clear and present danger to the Starship Federation, but they sure do know how to party! Pay homage to the Star Trek fandom with this highly-intoxicating beverage.
The only materials required for this simple cocktail are: blue curacao, vodka, and lemonade.
Pro-tip: Top your cocktails off with dry ice for a major WOW factor.
(Don’t eat the dry ice, though)
Use Metallic Slime as a Fun Party Favor
Look, I’m not going to pretend I understand the slime trend that’s captured the entire world, but there’s no sense in denying that the slime craze is here and it’s now officially required for Halloween.
With this in mind, here’s a tutorial on how to make your own DIY slime.
I recommend spicing it up by making a metallic version and calling it something nerdy and awesome like Valyrian Steel.
Spook Your Guests with Mirror Messages
From Carrie, to The Shining, to Poltergeist and dozens of other movies – the horror film industry has trained us all to be inherently spooked by mirrors. Lucky for us, this means it doesn’t take much to freak people out with just a mirror and cheap red lipstick.
Go classic with a message Harry Potter fans will recognize, “The Chamber of Secrets is Open – Mudbloods Beware!” or use a message that strikes fear into every nerd: “The Wi-Fi is down.”
What a nightmare.
Decorate Your Back Patio with Geeky Pumpkins
It’s not a proper Halloween without pumpkins! But, you don’t have to do your typical, standard Jack-O-Lantern. Instead, spice up your life with some serious nerdcore pumpkins.
For inspiration, check out DigsDigs’ 42 Geek and Nerdy Pumpkin Ideas for Halloween.
And, if memory serves me correctly, teenagers can be absolute monsters on Halloween, so try to keep your precious pumpkins in your backyard for safe-keeping.
And, there you have it! I hope you enjoy our six tips for a super nerdy Halloween party. Let us know if you end up using any and be sure to share it on social media!
Until next time,
