We have enjoyed being able to bring to people interactive and living products that inspire connectivity with the natural world and hope that an appreciation for biological science continues to awaken the imagination in minds of all generations.

You probably know that BioPop began when our founders, Andy and Dean, were inspired by something amazing they observed in nature. But did you know that there’s another awesome and unique company out there that had a similar start? They’re called Ecovative and instead of working with bioluminescent organisms, they’re working with… mushrooms 🍄.

By taking the root structure of mushrooms, called mycelium, and letting that grow around agricultural waste (think corn husks and hemp stalks), the company creates a variety of 100% compostable and natural products. So far they’ve developed an expanded plastic foam alternative used for packaging and insulation, as well as an alternative for those formaldehyde-filled fake wood materials.

The products come entirely from nature, so when you’re done with it, you can simply throw it out in your yard and it will naturally decompose. How cool is that?? And don’t worry- they kill the mushroom roots before they ever develop spores or a fruiting body, so it’s completely safe for everyone.

The idea STEMmed from (😉 ) Eben Bayer observing mycelium gluing particles together out in nature. He teamed up with Gavin McIntyre during a college course called Inventor’s Studio at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to bring the idea to life. By combining nature with engineering, design, and science, Eben and Gavin developed a revolutionary way to grow materials from nature, instead of manufacturing them.

Ecovative has spent the last few years working hard to get big businesses to pick up this technology and move towards a more sustainable future, and now they’re looking to spread the mushroom love! 💕

By partnering with a forward thinking Brooklyn-based designer Danielle Trofe, Ecovative launched a bio-lamp that you GROW YOURSELF using their unique process in your own home!

Starting today, Ecovative and Danielle Trofe have a Kickstarter campaign that you should check out below. The Grow-It-Yourself lamp is an awesome way to combine design, art, and science (which we know you’re fond of)!

We’re excited to help Ecovative bring sustainable design to all. If you’d like to join the initiative, we invite you to check out their Kickstarter campaign.
