Charming, beautiful, fun, and educational, the Dino Pet may just be the coolest new thing on four legs! And it’s also one of the most awesomely unique gifts you can give this holiday season. For that special someone on your list who “has everything,” for that scientist or educator in your life, or for that starry-eyed kid who has a deep and abiding love and curiosity for the natural world around her, BioPop’s products make the perfect holiday gift. But as with any pet, gifting one of our bioluminescent products comes with extra considerations and commitments. This guide will...

BioPop propagates a species of dinoflagellate classified as Pyrocystis fusiformis. BioPop is the dinoflagellate authority when it comes to growth and production of this species. To date, BioPop has grown well over 30,000 liters of dinoflagellates in our facility in Carlsbad, CA. This translates to roughly 9 trillion individual dinoflagellate cells. Biopop is committed to providing comprehensive information on dinoflagellate care. Oftentimes we need to condense and simplify this information so it does not overwhelm the average Dino Pet owner. This segment is for the Dino Pet owner who wants to dive into the details.  To put simply, dinoflagellates are...

BioPop’s dinoflagellates are phytoplankton- plant-like, single-cell life forms (think algae). The dinoflagellates in our products are special because they have an internal clock that controls when they can emit light (bioluminescence) and when they are able to gain energy from the sun (photosynthesis). This internal clock is referred to as a circadian rhythm and just like humans, the dinoflagellates survive on a 24-hour cycle. Their circadian rhythm is determined by the day and night cycles of prior days (and weeks). Altering when and how long the dinoflagellates receive light can affect their cycle going forward. Ideally dinoflagellates should get 10-14...

Red Tide predicted for South Ponto Beach tonight! Well... sort of. While there won't be a true natural Red Tide, BioPop will be celebrating Earth Day on the beach with one of Mother Nature’s most spectacular phenomena- bioluminescence! Join us tonight, April 22nd, around 8:00pm (sunset) at Carlsbad Blvd. Encinitas, CA (near the volleyball courts). We will have a bioluminescent lagoon to splash around in, Dino Pets to play with, a fire pit to enjoy, and new products to check out.  This will be a great opportunity to learn more about dinoflagellates and bioluminescence, and meet the BioPop team while you're at it! We hope to see...

You asked, and we listened-- we’ve created a new shape to showcase dinoflagellates! It’s round and elegant, and it’s called the Dino Sphere. This glass sphere is 10cm in diameter, and the contents inside glow brilliantly with the swirl of your hand at night. Just like the Dino Pet, the dinoflagellates gain energy from the sun during the day, and glow brilliantly when interacted with at night. What makes the Dino Sphere different, besides its modern shape? Less maintenance! A Dino Sphere will last several months in the right temperature and with a proper light/dark schedule. You can extend the...

Did you know that blue is the most favored color in the world? Seriously, 10 countries across the globe identified blue as their country’s favorite color in a recent study. Well, for all of you blue fans out there, we have a new friend to introduce you to… Dino Pet Blue! If you own a Dino Pet (or have explored our site enough), you know that in order to keep your dinos happy and healthy over time, you need to feed them Dino Food once every 7-10 days. Dino Food is made up of saltwater and nutrients that the dinoflagellates...
