The Top Glowing Science Stories from May, 2015 In May, plankton ruled the headlines Down Under and in The New Yorker.  The bioluminescent variety also inspired our crew at BioPop to conceptualize a futuristic light bulb design that uses sea life to glow.   3 — The Drifting World — Plankton are at the center of the marine food web, produce at least half of the oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere, and absorb enough carbon dioxide each year to counteract half of humankind’s fossil-fuel emissions. Altogether, they make up ninety-eight per cent of the oceans’ biomass, more than every whale, shark,...

Russia's making it rain today with 2,500 lbs of space junk, so... duck and cover!  At some point today, a rogue Russian spacecraft called Progress 59 will make a fiery descent through Earth's atmosphere after failing to complete a resupply mission. Shortly after reaching orbit the capsule began spinning wildly out of control causing Russian controllers to abandon the plan to dock with the International Space Station.   The capsule was loaded with over 3 tons of supplies including "three tons of food, fuel, and supplies for the space station crew, including 1,940 pounds of propellant, 110 pounds of oxygen,...

The Top 10 Science Stories from April, 2015 In April, rockets landed on autonomous barges (sorta), bullets started guiding themselves and the Brontosaurus got some long-awaited vindication.   10 — So Heady — Like a real-life Dr. Frankenstein without the need for lightning, an Italian neurosurgeon just found a volunteer for his probably way-too-ambitious plan to perform the first human head transplant (or human body transplant, if you want to be all precise about it). To make matters all the more creepy, he’s taken to posing with fake human heads to gain publicity. (check out one such photo & read...

Allow me to confess something - The title of this article is entirely misleading, because this doctor doesn't plan on transplanting a human head, but rather an entire human body. That's right, this not-at-all-creepy looking dude above (Dr. Sergio Canavero of Italy) is on a quest to attach a nice functioning body to the head of a man whose current body is failing him.   A Russian named Valery Spiridonov, who suffers from degenerative Werdnig-Hoffman disease, has volunteered his head for Dr. Canavero's literal chopping block.   The questionable Doc is being a little coy about how he's going to...

In a tireless pursuit of providing the best bioluminescent experience possible, our bespectacled team of scientists has been hard at work in the lab developing a new Dino Food formulation. And boy, did they hit it out of the park! Brighter — As you can see from the graph below, the new Dino Food formula (red) increased the peak brightness of the dinoflagellates by almost 50%. What’s more, the little dinos are able to sustain their bioluminescence longer without additional agitation. Faster — The micronutrients in Dino Food 2.0 have also proven to produce quicker growth and reproduction. That means...
