The Art Deco Dino Sphere is a limited edition (only 100 available) version of the Dino Sphere available in white/clear and blue/clear.
The Dino Sphere is BioPop’s salute to nature — a solar powered showpiece for one of the world’s most extraordinary phenomena. Simple and elegant, the Dino Sphere is an interactive living world that glows brilliantly when swirled at night. The natural blue glow emitted by the Dino Sphere is bioluminescence, produced by thousands of tiny marine plankton called dinoflagellates.
The Dino Sphere is the perfect objet d’art for all types of contemporary and classic decor — and is sure to excite the imaginations of anyone in its orbit!
The Dino Sphere contains living organisms, so all orders must ship via express delivery (Standard Shipping is USPS Priority). If you select Standard Shipping or 2-day FedEx Shipping during checkout, we ship these orders on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday only. If you order after 12pm PT on Wednesday, your order will be held until the following week. Be sure to open the package immediately upon arrival and follow the instructions inside the Dino Sphere box.
Orders will be held during extreme weather conditions (extreme heat or inclement weather). Orders will be shipped/delivered when weather permits.
*NEW* - Next Day Domestic Shipping Option!
Do you live in a US region that has extreme temperatures? For the health of the dinoflagellates, we recommend that you choose the next day shipping option during checkout so the living dinoflagellates are only in transit for 1 day! If you select FedEx Overnight Shipping during checkout and place your order before 12pm PT Monday-Thursday, your order will be shipped that afternoon for arrival the next day (except for holidays). Note: Orders placed between Thursday 12pm and Monday 12pm will ship on Monday.
BioPop currently ships Dino Sphere within the USA and internationally to Canada, UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, Japan and Hong Kong. Duties and taxes are included in the shipping rate and collected at check out. The Dino Sphere is still working on getting clearance for other international travel destinations. Please sign up to our newsletter at the bottom of this page and we'll let you know the moment the Dino Sphere is available to buy in your country!
Moderate lighting (indirect sunlight or artificial room light) is ideal. Keep Dino Sphere away from direct sunlight or intense light conditions. Low light conditions are optimal versus intense light.
The ideal temperature for Dino Sphere is 68F (20C). Keep the Dino Sphere within a temperature range of 63F to 77F (17C- 25C). A sudden drastic change in temperature is not recommended.
Dino Sphere Lifetime: A Dino Sphere will produce light for several months by providing consistent moderate lighting and moderate temperatures. To extend the lifetime of Dino Sphere, add small amounts of Dino Food or Dino Food Blue every few months.
Bioluminescence: The Dino Sphere will only light up when swirled in a dark room during nighttime hours. The Dino Sphere will not light up during daytime hours, even in a dark room. The Dino Sphere will generally start to produce light after about an hour into its nighttime phase when swirled in the dark. The light intensity will increase as the night progresses.
Please don't! Nothing included in your shipment should go in the fridge. The dinoflagellates are living organisms that need a precise temperature range to live (63-77° F or 17-25° C). As soon as you receive the package, follow the instructions inside.
If for some reasons you are unable to fill your Dino Sphere with the dinoflagellates upon delivery, take the dinoflagellate pouch out of the box and give it the lighting and temperature conditions as described in the directions. The dinoflagellates can live in their pouch with the right conditions for several days.
Your Dino Sphere may not light up on the first or even second night. The shipping process can be a little rough. You may need to give the Dino Sphere a day or two of light before you will see any bioluminescence. If your Dino Sphere doesn't light up after a couple of nights, shoot us an email at email@example.com so we can help you troubleshoot and/or send you a healthy refill!
All you have to do is leave the dinos in a sunlit room during the day, making sure to keep them out of direct sunlight. If you don’t have any sunlit rooms to speak of, you can simply leave them under a low-wattage bulb for 10 to 12 hours a day. If you want your dinos to live a long and happy life, keep them in a room that stays between 63-77° Fahrenheit (17-25° C).
A Dino Sphere should produce light for several months with nothing but consistent moderate lighting and moderate temperatures. To extend the life of your Dino Sphere, add small amounts of Dino Sphere Nutrients every 7-10 days (sold separately at biopop.com).
The cap in the Dino Sphere allows for constant air exchange, so you don’t need to worry about opening it up!
Not at all! Dinoflagellates exist in tumultuous environments in the natural world. They’re used to cruising with the currents and crashing with the waves, so a little shake is nothing they aren’t well accustomed to.
Also, they’re photosynthetic plankton. That means, they’re much more akin to the lettuce on your salad plate than they are to the dog in your yard. Dinoflagellates don’t have brains, nerves, pain receptors or anything of the sort. If you still think the Dino Sphere is cruel, then you should probably avoid beer, wine and even bread for that matter. Millions of microorganisms (yeast) die in the making of every delicious brew you drink, and sandwich you eat.
The dinoflagellates used in the Dino Sphere are a species of marine plankton that have the ability to bioluminesce in response to mechanical agitation, also known as shaking. If you want to get all Science-y about it, they are unicellular protists of the division Dinoflagellata and of the species Pyrocystis fusiformis.
The lifespan of the dinoflagellates will vary based on their exposure to sunshine, external temperature and how quickly they require new nutrients to be supplemented. Typically, a Dino Sphere will live for a fews months on nothing but a little indirect sunlight. Extend the life of your dinoflagellates by routinely adding a little bit of Dino Sphere Nutrients to the mix and you can prolong their life, forever… Seriously, by regularly adding Dino Sphere Nutrients, the dinos can potentially reproduce indefinitely.
The micro-aquarium is made of glass.
So it works like this: much like plants that produce vegetables, dinos harness the sun’s energy and convert it into chemical energy through good ol’ photosynthesis. Instead of using the chemical energy to produce delicious foodstuffs, however, dinos use it to produce light through bioluminescence. Because the dinos have a circadian rhythm based on light and dark cycles, this bioluminescence is only visible at night.
Although some species of dinoflagellates live in fresh water, the particular dinos we sell are found naturally in the deep blue sea. BioPop collected a few dinoflagellates from the ocean to start our original culture. Today we grow dinoflagellates in a 'greenhouse' like environment in our lab so as not to impact the environment.
The dinoflagellates need continuous shaking to maintain an intense glow, but the show doesn’t end when the shaking stops. Before the dinos have a chance to settle, they will continue to move through the water lighting up as they bounce off of one another making for a light show similar to a meteor shower.
While we recommend that you do not drink the dinoflagellates because they live in salt water that will probably give you a tummy ache, the Pyrocystis fusiformis species of dinoflagellates we use are nontoxic and completely safe for children.
The rate at which the dinos asexually reproduce is entirely dependent on the amount of available light, dark, and nutrients. You’ll be in charge of making sure the dinos get enough playtime in the light and sleep in the dark, but BioPop sells the Dino Sphere Nutrients to make sure your dinos are flush with nutrients to extend their life.
Your Dino Sphere lights up in response to mechanical stimulation — shaking! Give your Dino Sphere a swirl to see the beautiful bioluminescence of the dinoflagellates within.
Make sure to play with your Dino Sphere in the darkest room possible. Even a small bit of ambient light can mask the bioluminescence.
